Monroe is looking for a loving forever home after a rough beginning.

Monroe - SAHS Medical Story

This handsome four-year-old Terrier mix was brought into the San Antonio Humane Society by a Good Samaritan in March in heartbreaking condition. He was found sitting on the side of the road, severely injured and in need of help. Monroe was covered in mud, with wounds all over his body and most of his front teeth broken, leading us to believe he may have been attacked by other dogs or another animal. The worst injuries were to his neck and back hip, some so severe that muscles and tendons were visible.

Monroe - SAHS Medical Story

Our Leeu Naylor Medical Building team went straight to work to clean and treat his wounds. Some had to be surgically repaired, and we noticed that he wasn’t able to use the leg that had the worst of the injuries. He was unable to wag his tail as well, and there was a possibility we would need to amputate for his quality of life. But once his injuries were healed up, we decided to try and save his leg and tail by starting laser therapy and exercises in the underwater treadmill. Little by little, Monroe regained movement in his back leg and his tail, and thankfully no amputations were needed!

He is feeling so much better now and is all ready to meet you. We are so proud of Monroe and all the progress he’s made since he arrived at the SAHS.

Monroe - SAHS Medical Story

Despite everything he’s been through, Monroe is the absolute sweetest dog who loves being around people and getting treats. He even still does great around other dogs, and can join a home with a canine friend after a proper dog intro here at the SAHS. He has even shown signs that he could be good around cats as well, so he would be perfect for any home. This sweet and resilient guy is ready to join his forever family, so come meet him today!

ADOPTED! This 8-month-old Terrier mix was found wandering a neighborhood in early April alongside his sister and was brought to the shelter by a kind Good Samaritan. While his sister appeared healthy and confident, Reef’s condition raised concern.

Reef medical story

Our team of veterinarians quickly discovered that Reef had a congenital eye condition that left him visually impaired, with the chance for potentially painful dryness and damage to both eyes. To relieve Reef’s discomfort and give him the best quality of life, our medical team made the decision to surgically remove both of Reef’s eyes. But Reef hasn’t let that slow him down one bit.

Reef medical story

This resilient little pup is full of life! Reef loves to run around the yard, play, bark, and happily trot over for cuddles. His world may look different, but his joyful spirit is just as bright as ever.

Reef medical story

While Reef is adapting well, adopters are still encouraged to work with a veterinarian to learn how to best support a visually impaired dog. Come spend some time with Reef and see firsthand just how incredible this brave little pup truly is – you might just find your perfect match.

ADOPTED! Meet the most perfect little feline, Dwayne. This 4-year-old orange tabby joined us back at the beginning of February after he was found as a stray by a good samaritan. Upon his intake exam, our team noticed that Dwayne needed more attention than the average pet.

Dwayne - Medical story

Our Leeu Naylor Medical Building staff determined that Dwayne’s had a chronically dislocated hip and, in his case, this issue would be chronic. So, for his happiness and comfort, our team decided to amputate his back left leg. Dwayne’s recovery was more extensive than usual, and as a result, he struggled with eating regularly. But, our team noticed that Dwayne had a particular appetite for a specific flavor of treats. He made it clear that only the Temptations ‘Birthday’ flavor (beef & lobster) would do!

Dwayne - Medical story

When we were nearing our last bag, our team reached out to the public for help. And, thanks to all the generous donations, Dwayne had received nearly 55 pounds of the treats! Now, Dwayne is feeling better, fully stocked on his favorite goodies, and ready to find his forever home.

Dwayne - Medical story

Despite everything he’s been through, Dwayne has remained an incredibly loving feline that captured the hearts of our whole team. He adores cuddles and often had members of our staff hanging out in his recovery space for some quality snuggle time.
Dwayne may still be adjusting to life as a tripod-cat, but our team is confident he’ll be back to normal activity soon. He’s the perfect match for someone looking for a cuddly and resilient companion with a gourmet palate.

Dwayne - Medical story

Come spend some time with Dwayne today and see if this sweet boy is the missing piece to your family. And don’t worry, he’ll be going home with plenty of his favorite treats to keep him happy!

ADOPTED! Meet the most adorable little pup, Shirly! This sweet 9-month-old Terrier mix first came to us at the end of December after she was found wandering our property. It was clear from the start that Shirly needed immediate medical care as she was displaying concerning symptoms.

Shirly medical story

Our dedicated Leeu Naylor Medical team began the careful process of treating Shirly. At first, our team suspected possible toxin exposure, but after further testing, Shirly was diagnosed with a Portosystemic Shunt (PSS). With this condition, Shirly’s blood was bypassing the liver instead of being properly filtered, causing toxins to build up in her body and lead to neurological symptoms.

Shirly medical story

To give Shirly the best chance at a healthy life, Shirly underwent a surgery to correct the shunt. A special constrictor was placed on the abnormal vessel to gradually restore normal blood flow. And, after nearly three months receiving treatment in our medical building and spending time in foster homes, Shirly is finally ready to find her forever family!

Shirly medical story

Despite everything she’s been through, Shirly has remained incredibly sweet and full of puppy energy. Her adorable face and joyful personality are sure to win over anyone she meets. While our team is very optimistic about her complete recovery, she will need adopters who are committed to working with their primary veterinarian to monitor her long-term health. She’ll continue weaning off her medications through mid-May but is already feeling more like herself every day.

Shirly medical story

Come by and spend some time with Shirly because you just might just be meeting your new best friend. After her long journey, she’s more than ready for a loving home!

On Friday, March 20, the San Antonio Humane Society had the privilege of hosting a very special re-enlistment ceremony for Lauren Duran, a member of the United States Navy and passionate animal advocate.

Navy re-enlistment photo

Duran began her TNR efforts in September 2023, spaying/neutering feral cats in her neighborhood to help prevent unwanted litters. She has brought each cat to our Leeu Naylor Medical Building for spay and neuter surgeries, supported by the San Antonio Feral Cat Coalition. Her commitment to animal welfare mirrors the discipline and heart she brings to her eight-year Navy career.

From Navy re-enlistment ceremony

Duran reflected on the growth she’s experienced in the Navy, from learning to “flow” with life in Naval Aircrew to earning the prestigious Shannon M. Kent Award for Language Professional Excellence in 2023. During the ceremony with her friends and family, she emphasized the importance of finding something you’re passionate about to help serve your community.

Choosing the San Antonio Humane Society as the site of her re-enlistment was a natural choice. “At the end of the day, these creatures just want to be seen and cared for,” she said, words that resonate deeply with our mission. As she looks ahead to joining the Military Language Analyst Program following her re-enlistment, we celebrate both her continued military service and her dedication to the animals she cares for every day.

ADOPTED! Are you ready to meet the sweetest little 6-month-old puppy? Introducing Chase! She is a beautiful Terrier mix who came to us in December after being found as a stray on the side of the road. When she first arrived, she was very scared and undersocialized, unsure of the people around her. After her spay surgery, Chase began experiencing gastrointestinal issues and required IV fluids, stomach medications, and plenty of TLC from our medical team. Because of her already timid nature and the strict care schedule she needed, she unfortunately started to associate people with exams, pokes, and medication, causing her to shut down socially. The good news is that Chase is now feeling much better physically! And with support from our Training and Enrichment team, she’s been working hard to rebuild her confidence and learn to trust again, and she’s made wonderful progress.

Chase - Medical story dog

Chase is now ready to find her forever home! She may still be a little shy at first, but with patience and kindness, her sweet and silly personality really begins to shine. She’s growing more comfortable with affection (especially when treats are involved) and she loves to “talk” and share her thoughts with her people. She will likely do best on a sensitive stomach diet moving forward, but otherwise doesn’t require any additional medical care. All she needs is a loving family who will help her feel safe and give her time to continue coming out of her shell!

Chase - Medical story dog

Right now, Chase is staying in one of our offices where she can continue building her confidence, but she would love the chance to meet you! Just stop by our Adoption Lobby and ask for Chase, or email adoption@SAhumane.org to schedule a visit. With her goofy charm and gorgeous eyes, Chase is sure to steal your heart, so come meet her today!

Meet Kevin, a resilient and soft-natured senior dog who came to the San Antonio Humane Society just before Christmas. He is an 8-year-old German Shepherd mix who was surrendered after his previous owners were not able to provide the medical care he urgently needed.
When Kevin first arrived in our care, it was clear he was extremely uncomfortable. Our amazing staff in the Leeu Naylor Medical Building found that Kevin was suffering from significant skin inflammation and had noticeable hair loss. The irritation was mostly centered in a large hot spot on his chest, which made him extremely itchy. Ear cytology tests revealed he had an active infection in both ears that required immediate treatment and regular cleanings.

Medical story Kevin - a resilient and soft-natured senior dog that came to the SAHS in urgent need of medical care

Kevin began a dedicated recovery plan that included weekly medicated baths, laser light therapy to help stimulate hair regrowth around his ears, careful wound management with topical medications and creams, allergy medication, and a special diet. Most importantly, he was given plenty of TLC from our staff and volunteers. After several weeks of attentive care, Kevin has made amazing progress and is now ready to find his forever home!

Medical story Kevin - a resilient and soft-natured senior dog that came to the SAHS in urgent need of medical care

We don’t know yet if he will have a complete recovery of his hair, but we know that regardless, he will remain a truly lovable dog. After spending much of his life outdoors, he would thrive in a home with a cozy bed, calm environment, and plenty of affection. Come and meet Kevin today; he is sure to leave a lasting impression, just as he has on our staff and volunteers.
