Child protection and children's rights

Every child has the right to grow up safe from violence, abuse, neglect and exploitation, and to be heard when something is wrong.

What child protection means

Child protection is about preventing harm before it happens and responding properly when a child is at risk. It involves families, communities, schools and public institutions working together in the child's best interests.

Children's rights in practice

  • The right to be safe and protected from all forms of violence.
  • The right to education and to play.
  • The right to express views and be taken seriously.
  • The right to privacy and dignity.
  • The right not to be discriminated against.

Prevention of violence and exploitation

Awareness, trusted adults and safe spaces are among the most effective protections. We support activities that help children recognise their rights and know where to turn for help.

If you are worried about a child

If a child is in immediate danger, contact the police on 129 or emergency services on 112. In Albania, the national child helpline ALO 116 111 offers free, confidential support for children and young people. You can also contact us using the details on our contact page.
